Dental Implant Post-op Care Instructions

Post-operative care instructions after a Dental Implant procedure by Dr. Miriam Ting.

Our dental implant surgeries are minimally invasive, you will experience faster recovery and hardly any discomfort. Every patient is different. If you experience more pain it is also normal, you’ve just had a surgery.

Here are some post-surgical care to maximize your healing and improve the long-term outcome of your dental implants:

• Do not disturb the surgical site. Some bleeding or redness is normal for the first 24 hours.
• In case of more oozing, fold a piece of gauze into quarters and place over the surgical site. Apply firm pressure by biting on the gauze for about 30 minutes. Change the gauze as needed.

• Avoid spitting or rinsing for the first 24 hours. Spitting and rinsing will disturb the blood clot and prolong the bleeding.

• The metal implant-supported healing abutment may protrude through the gum tissue, do not touch it with your tongue, forces on the implant during healing could compromise the healing.

• Don’t forget to take all the medications as prescribed.

• Don’t forget to rinse as directed with the antimicrobial mouthwash recommended.

• If you have a delicate tissue biotype, some Swelling or bruising may occur and is normal. To reduce the swelling and bruising apply an ice pack to the outside of the face during the first 24 hours after surgery. Moist heat may be applied starting on the 4th day to help resolve any swelling or bruising that has occured.

• Do not smoke for at least four days following surgery. Smoking will delay healing and increase post-operative pain.

• Beware the temperature of hot foods,  the blood supply to your gums is not fully established and may not redistribute the heat effectively, and your gums may get burnt.

• Soft food and liquids can be eaten on the day of the surgery. Try to eat soft and nutritious foods such as eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, ice cream etc. Avoid hard and crunchy foods.Warm salt water rinses after meals can help removed food particles.

• Gently brush your teeth and the healing abutments to keep them clean.

• Keep physical activities light for a few days after the surgery. Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting.
