COSMETIC PERIODONTAL SURGERY

When you’re trying to make a great first impression, one of the first things people notice is what a great smile you have, or in some cases, don’t have.

Some aspects of your smile you have no control over, but in other cases, you can take steps to enhance your smile and also protect the health of your teeth and gums.

The Benefits of Cosmetic Periodontal Surgery

If you suffer from unsightly, exposed or sensitive root surfaces or have a gummy smile you can elect to undergo cosmetic periodontal surgery.

The truth of the matter is, most teeth are the right length, but they may be covered by too much gum tissue, making them appear to be short. Conversely, when gums recede, they can reveal tooth roots, which make a smile much less appealing than it could be.

If left untreated, the exposed root surface may be prone to decay, and subsequent treatment could be much more complicated and expensive.

Gum Surgery can Give you a Better Smile

If you want to restore the balance of your smile, first you will need to make sure any infections have been removed. Removing plaque and tartar from tooth and gum surfaces through scaling and root planing is the first step in charting the course toward a better smile.

Once a mouth heals from all the bacteria and possible sources of infection, Dr. Ting can perform a number of different cosmetic periodontal surgery procedures.

One possible procedure is a crown lengthening procedure in which excess gum and bone tissue are reshaped to expose more of the patient’s natural tooth. It can be done to a single tooth or an entire gum line.

In other cases, Dr. Ting may perform a gum graft. This involves taking soft tissue from the top of a patient’s palette, from nearby gum tissue, or taking from a tissue bank and implanting it into an area that has receding gum. Not only will this restore a more beautiful smile, it will also protect roots from decay and loss.

Dr. Ting may also perform bone grafting following the loss of a tooth to help preserve the bony ridge and minimize bone collapse. This is often the first step in placing a dental implant.
